Excerpt from today’s WP: George Will reeled off the figures below In a column today. Now US national statistics should be approached with caution. We have always been spread out geographically with an attitude towards government that ranges from libertarian to in your face anarchist. However there is no reason to presume that the macros are grossly out of whack and if anything the black economy is probably bigger now than 1955. So look at the numbers and see the dirty little secret of the last fifty years. Labor force participation is up from 32% of the population to 42% that is a 1/3rd increase [42/32]. We have kept up the standard of living by having a two income family support fewer children and other dependents than one-income families used to. Ain’t progress grand. Women can now work dawn to dusk like on a farm…LOL

In 1955 America's population was about 166 million, the civilian workforce was 54.2 million and union membership was 17.9 million, which was 33 percent of the workforce. Today the population is about 290 million, the civilian workforce is about 122 million
